The new specifications do away with consonant character attributes that are statically assigned by the shaping engine. Instead, they depend on the font. For example, the typeface itself determines whether there are post-base forms, below-base forms, etc. This idea was also present in the original Suruma font. Gayathri features a total of 1124 glyphs, which includes some rudimentary latin support. Support is provided for all Malayalam characters specified up to Unicode 11.
Binoy Dominic's initial font is this. As a graphic designer, he has demonstrated his lettering abilities by working on branding projects for companies using Malayalam material. Due to the typeface's conventional glyph design, there was room for a substantial amount of stacked conjuncts. Gayathri is particularly made for huge displays and titles. A design strategy therefore included avoiding excessive below base stacking. The conjunct glyph set was chosen with care; it changed as the design developed. A carefully calculated opentype rule set made sure that, in appropriate usecases, signs are never split from their consonants. Additionally, conditional clustering opentype rules would be used to divide lengthier conjuncts in logically sound ways.
